Pediatric eye exams

At Envision Eye Care, it’s our goal to make sure that you’re experiencing life with clear vision and healthy eyes. From thorough vision examinations to a great selection of glasses and contact lenses, we take the time to get to know you and personalize your experience in a way that brings you the best care possible.

Our commitment to total eye health extends to all members of your family, including children. We offer pediatric eye exams, because we understand that they are essential for your child’s eye health, as well as to their vision, which can affect their ability to perform well in school, their social development, and their self-esteem.

Why Children’s Eye Exams are Important

Children rely on clear vision to learn and develop, and regular eye exams are the only way to ensure that all parts of their eyes are functioning properly. If your child is experiencing blurry vision, they could struggle with reading, writing, socializing, and playing sports, which can lead them to fall behind academically and socially and may lead to low self-esteem and behavioral issues.

Signs Your Child Needs an Eye Exam

Many signs that your child is experiencing issues with their eyesight are noticeable, including:

  • Frequent eye rubbing

  • Excessive blinking

  • Inability to hold a steady gaze

  • Squinting or closing one eye to see

  • Head tilting or turning

  • Wandering eye or crossed eyes

  • Droopy eyelids

  • Poor tracking skills

Vision problems can be apparent in your child’s behavior or their performance in school. For example, if your child has trouble with their vision, they might avoid reading and writing or seem to have a short attention span, which can cause them to fall behind academically.

What Happens During aPediatric Eye Exam?

Our optometrists at Envision Eye Care offer comprehensive children’s eye exams, using advanced methods to evaluate your child’s entire visual system.

The examination techniques we use will vary depending on your child’s age, developmental stage, medical eye history, health condition, and personal risk factors. Every child is unique, and we tailor our kids’ eye exams accordingly.

Our pediatric eye exams cover:

  • Visual acuity and vision prescription

  • Binocularity (eye teaming)

  • Tracking skills

  • Accommodation (focusing ability)

  • Peripheral vision

  • Color vision

  • Hand-eye coordination

  • Overall eye health

In addition to comprehensive eye exams for children, we treat pediatric eye emergencies, such as eye infections, eye injuries from sports such as black eyes or blunt trauma, or scratches to the cornea. We also manage eye allergies, which occur frequently for children and may cause painful symptoms.

How Often Do Kids Need Eye Exams?

The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends booking routine eye exams for children staring at six months old. When you come to Envision Eye Care for your child’s pediatric eye examination, we’ll provide personalized instructions about when to return for follow-up appointments, although at least once per year is generally recommended, given how much a child’s eyes can change in just a few months.
